10 Ways of Protection from Shaytan

Imam Ibn ul Qayyim

Seeking refuge with Allah from Shaytan. Allah the Most High said, “And if there comes to you from Satan an evil suggestion, then seek refuge in Allah. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Knowing.” [41:36]

Recitation of the two soorahs al-Falaq and an-Nas, as they have wondrous effect in seeking refuge with Allah from evil, weakening Shaytan and protection from him. This is why the Messenger, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, said: “No person seeks refuge with anything like the Mu`awwidhatayn (soorahs al-Falaq and an-Nas)”. [an-Nasaa’i, 5337]

Recitation of Ayat al-Kursi (2:255).

Recitation of soorah al-Baqarah. The Messenger, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, said, “The house in which al-Baqarah is recited is not approached by Shaytan.” [Muslim]

The final part of al-Baqarah. The Messenger, sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam, said, “Whoever recites the two last verses of al-Baqarah at night they will suffice him.” [Muslim]

Recitation of the beginning of soorah Mu’min (Ghafir), until His saying, “wa ilayhi-l-maseer” (to Him is the destination). (i.e. “Ha. Meem. The revelation of the Book is from Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Knowing, the forgiver of sin, acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, owner of abundance. There is no deity except Him; to Him is the destination.” [40:1-2])

Saying “la ilaha ill Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul mulku wa lahul hamdu wa huwa `ala kulli shay’in qadir” (there is nothing worthy of worship except Allah, He has no partner, His is the Dominion and Praise, and He is able to do all things) a hundred times.

The most beneficial form of protection from Shaytan: abundance of remembrance of Allah, the Exalted.

Ablution and prayer, and they are from among the greatest means of protection, especially at the time of emergence of anger and desire.

Abstinence from excess speech, food and mixing with people.

Alot of Muslims brothers and sisters like myself are lacking the knowledge in this department i am happy to see websites like this to give us light of knowledge in our dark days of ignorance. It’s a modern day problem for the Ummah.

May Allah admit us all to he’s paradise and allow us to drink kawsthar from resulullah’s hands.

  5. salaam to all,
jazakaalah khair for this useful information, may allah swt reward u. inshalah i will make practice of these duas and spread the word.

  6. Thank you very much for putting this up. I have committed many sins and I do not know if Allah the Almighty will forgive me or not. But when I am praying I feel so happy and at peace. There are so many new things to learn about our wonderful religion. I have noticed that most of the people who insult our glorious religion have not read the Quran or even a little bit of it, otherwise they could not possibly say anything bad about it. If possible, can you please post the transliterations of these duas and their translations? Peace to all of you and I hope that InshAllah Allah grants us all a life of wisdom and happiness.

  7. salaam, jazakallah khair this information was very benificial for myself and my family

  8. Salaam brothers and sisters

I have sinned so much and it is only upto Allah SWT to shed his unconditional love and undying mercy on me.

I always have in my mind to commit sins and I cannot stop these thoughts I believe this is waswasa.

Writing this message has bought a tear to my eye.

I love Allah SWT and fear only him and I hoe that he will protect us all. May Allah SWT bless us all and may we seek refuge in Allah SWT before it is too late, we can’t let the cursed shaytan win the battle against us human, always seek refuge in Allah SWT iA. Ameen. Please brothers and sisters do Dua for me iA for Allah to give me strength and for him to bless me :) . Surely Allah SWT knows best.

  9. Jazakala Khair for the duas.

I would just like to add, the Shaytan asked Allah SWA for a grace period so that he could prove to Allah SWA that the Muslims are not true believers in Allah. He said that Muslims will follow him rather than Allah SWA. It is important for every believer to understand how the Shaytan works on the weakness of mankind so that he can avoid falling into his traps.

Shaytan promised Allah that he will takes us with him in to Hell. Allah SWA said that those who fear Allah SWA will continue to do rightous deeds no matter what happens, they will follow Allah.

The Shaytan visits everyone, Muslims and Non Muslims everyday. He will come to you through ‘waswas’ evil thoughts or through evil people who will make suggestions to you that go against Islam.

Every day you should ask yourself, how has the shaytan viited me today? How did I respond to what happened? By reflecting on your actions you can change your respones that go in line with the deen. Alwayas remember not to compromise your deen for anyone.

I was listening to Sheikh Ismail Musa Ment, who is a Hafiz and completed his sharia law in Madina Unvirsity, interesting he mentioned that the shaytan is such that once he makes you commit a evil deed, he runs away leaving you to deal with the consequences of the action. On the day of Qayama the believer say in defence that it was the shaytan that lead him astray. The shaytan will speal and say ‘did you not use your intellect?, I was just fulfilling my promie which was to make all believers go astray, how about you? how come you did not fulfill your promise to stay on the right path and follow the commands of Allah SWA’.Subhan Allah.

Brothers and Sister, before you do any action, always weight it up on a scale before you take action. This world is full of glitter and it is ALL deceptive. Always turn to Allah SWA when you need help and read the Qur’an and sunnah which will equip you in handling all situations and trials in life.

    Insha’Allah
